Maintenance works on steam piping at a power facility in Austria

Austria | From mid-May to early June 2026, the PRO-Welding Industry Services team supported a client from the energy sector in Austria, carrying out maintenance works on steam and process piping systems.

Maintenance works on steam and process piping in Austria: valve replacement, carbon and stainless steel welding

Scope of welding and maintenance works on steam piping at a power facility

The project scope included the replacement of industrial fittings, valves, pipe bypasses and selected piping sections requiring assembly, welding and preparation for quality acceptance.

The works were carried out close to existing technical infrastructure and in areas with limited access.

One of the key tasks involved replacing a section of a large-diameter steam pipeline. The damaged section was cut out due to visible defects and indications detected in the pipe’s base material. The work required precise marking, cutting preparation and fitting of the new section in accordance with the geometry of the removed element.

As part of the project, the PRO-Welding Industry Services team carried out maintenance works including:

  • replacement of industrial fittings specified by the client,
  • replacement of valves and pipe bypass components,
  • dismantling and installation of process piping sections,
  • cutting out a damaged section of a large-diameter steam pipeline,
  • preparation and fitting of a new pipe segment into the existing system,
  • alignment of components using slings, hoists and scaffolding,
  • execution of circumferential welds on the large-diameter pipeline,
  • welding of carbon steel piping,
  • welding of stainless steel sections with weld root purging,
  • preparation of welded joints for NDT inspection.

This type of work requires strong coordination between fitters, welders and technical supervision. Key factors include not only the quality of the welds, but also proper component preparation, pipeline stabilisation, geometry control and maintaining safe working conditions.

Installation and welding of a large-diameter steam pipeline section

One of the key stages of the project involved the installation and welding of a large-diameter steam pipeline section. The damaged part of the system was cut out due to visible defects and indications detected in the pipe’s base material.

The works included preparation of the installation area, marking, fitting the new segment to the existing system geometry and execution of circumferential welds. The element was located in a hard-to-access part of the facility, so its handling, positioning and stabilisation required the use of slings, hoists and work from scaffolding level.

The scope also included the installation and welding of a flanged nozzle and preparation of the completed joints for non-destructive testing.

Welding of steam and process piping

The project included works on steam and process piping, as well as selected sections requiring specific procedures for material preparation, machining and welding. In the case of stainless steel, particular attention was paid to proper material preparation, maintaining clean working conditions and limiting contact with materials that could negatively affect the quality of execution.

Stainless steel welding was carried out with weld root purging, meaning that the internal side of the weld was protected with shielding gas. This solution helps maintain proper weld root quality and reduces the risk of oxidation on the internal side of the pipeline.

Thanks to proper component preparation, suitable welding technology and quality control, the completed joints could meet the requirements of the client and the supervising inspection body.

NDT, RT and PT inspections and quality acceptance

The elements included in the project scope were prepared for non-destructive testing, including radiographic testing (RT) and penetrant testing (PT). Quality control was carried out in line with the client’s requirements and the requirements of the inspection body responsible for final acceptance.

In energy sector projects, NDT inspections play a key role, as steam pipelines, industrial fittings and process installation components operate under increased load conditions. Each replacement, repair or modification must be completed in accordance with technical documentation, quality requirements and applicable acceptance procedures.
