Soda Recovery Boiler Modernization at an Integrated Pulp and Paper Mill in Belgium

Belgium | PRO-Welding Industry Services completed modernization works on a recovery boiler at a Belgian mill producing pulp and coated paper.

The scope included the replacement of tube elements in boiler zones exposed to high temperatures and an aggressive chemical environment. The project required precise dismantling, accurate fitting of new components and welding of specialist boiler materials, including composite tubes with a Sanicro® protective layer.

The works were carried out by a 5-person PRO-Welding Industry Services team and completed within 14 days.

Scope of Work on the Soda Recovery Boiler at a Pulp and Paper Mill

The project required experience in industrial boiler works, precise installation of tube elements and qualifications in welding high-alloy materials such as Sanicro®.

The scope included modernization of selected sections of the soda recovery boiler and replacement of tube elements specified for exchange as part of the maintenance shutdown.

As part of the project, the PRO-Welding Industry Services team carried out, among others:

  • dismantling of selected tube panel sections,
  • replacement of an 8-tube boiler floor panel,
  • replacement of 2 wall tube panels in the Primary Air zone,
  • preparation of the installation area for new components,
  • fitting of new tubes to the existing boiler geometry,
  • welding of tubes in a confined working space,
  • work on composite / bimetallic tubes with a Sanicro® layer,
  • preparation of welded joints for quality inspection and technical acceptance.

The project was carried out in an industrial environment where installation accuracy, welded joint quality and efficient coordination between fitters and welders were critical.

Replacement of the 8-Tube Boiler Floor Panel

One of the key stages of the project was the replacement of an 8-tube boiler floor panel. The works included dismantling of the existing element, edge preparation and installation of the new panel in line with the geometry of the existing system.

The floor tube panel of a soda recovery boiler operates under particularly demanding conditions. This area is exposed to high temperatures, contact with an aggressive process environment and intensive operational wear. In such locations, it is essential not only to ensure proper weld quality, but also accurate fitting of components, correct tube alignment and preparation of joints in accordance with the technical requirements of the project.

Modernization of the Primary Air Zone

The scope of work also included the replacement of 2 wall tube panels in the boiler’s Primary Air zone. This area is important for the proper operation of a soda recovery boiler, as it supplies air to the combustion process.

Work in this zone required precise cutting, fitting and installation of new tube elements within the existing boiler structure. Due to limited access to the work area, good organization, installation experience and the ability to carry out welding works in confined industrial spaces were essential.

Welding of Sanicro® and High-Alloy Materials

The project involved the use of composite / bimetallic tubes with a Sanicro® protective layer. These solutions are used in boiler sections particularly exposed to corrosion, high temperatures and aggressive chemical environments.

Welding Sanicro®-type materials requires appropriate qualifications, procedures and practical experience. Proper surface preparation, selection of welding technology, control of welding parameters and maintaining material cleanliness during processing and installation are critical.

Thanks to the experience of the PRO-Welding Industry Services team, the works were carried out in accordance with the quality requirements applicable to the modernization of industrial boiler components.

Quality Control and Technical Acceptance of Welded Joints

Works on soda recovery boilers require a high level of quality control. Welded joints must meet the requirements of technical documentation, welding procedures and acceptance standards applicable to boiler installations.

As part of the project, the welded joints were prepared for quality inspection and technical acceptance. Particular attention was paid to the quality of welds made on boiler tubes, accurate fitting of new panels and compliance of the works with the client’s technical requirements.

The successful completion of all required inspections and quality tests once again confirmed our position as a trusted partner in the heavy industry sector.
